Lady Sings the Blues

Rei Kawabuko strikes again, this time with a trio of unforgettable blues  – Comme des Garcons Blue.

Packaged in the iconic Comme des Garcons perfume bottle, Santal, Cedrat and Encens  are conceived as modern interpretations of Sandalwood, Citrus and Incense that play with the contrasting forces of hot and cold notes to create a spellbinding symphony in blue.

Comme des Garcons Play. Become part of our “Comme des Garçons Lovers Team”. For adults and children, boys or girls. everyone is welcome. Shirts, shoes and fragrances too, this enduring cult brand has it all. But, one of my all time favorites would be the “Jack Purcell” Converse sneakers. They’re the perfect match with a red, white, or black polos for that uber-cool look.

Flower of Immortality By Killian. Receiving “Flower of Immortality” was one of the best days for me here at Babalu Miami. Fresh, sweet and floral. All in a bouquet! Who doesn’t love peaches? Vanilla? White musk? Mmm! I can’t stay away from this delightfully sweet smell. With Summer just a few weeks away, you will love to walk around with this jaw dropping fragrance on your body. This is the type of fragrance that will make everyone turn back and ask, “What perfume are you wearing?” Yup! We have it here, now, for whenever you’re ready to experience astonishing aromas.

Thyme is of the Essence

Over the centuries thyme has been associated with just about anything. Ancient Egyptians used thyme for embalming, thinking it would pave way to the after-life. The Greeks believed it was a source of courage and the Romans thought it gave them vigor before battle. In the Middle Ages they credited it with warding off nightmares. The list goes on.

Personally, I just love the unique woody-herbal quality that thyme adds to a perfume. The presence of thyme for example, elevates COLOGNE POUR LE MATIN by Maison Francis Kurkdjian from an ordinary citrus-based eau de cologne into an unforgettable fragrance.

Whether for your skin or for your home, the scent of thyme is a must-have.

Check out the Babalu Perfume Bar for other distinct fragrances containing thyme, including Comme des Garcons Monocle (both Hinoki and Laurel) and all of the Alvarez Gomez Colonia products.

Esteban Cortazar: Desire Accessoires

Photos & Text by Cyn. Zarco

Flying in from Paris for a week of catch-up and TCB, South Beach’s favorite son fashion designer Esteban Cortazar stops by Babalu to pick out a few things.

“I love these!” he says, pulling a pair of folding Steve McQueen Persols from the display case. “I have them in black, in Paris,” he says almost forgetting where he lives.

“Hey, Cyn., what do you think of this brown watch?” he asks, adjusting the rubber strap of a rose gold Brera Eterno Solotempo around his wrist. I smile. I’ve photographed Esteban, now 25, since he was a kid throwing fashion shows at The Cushman School. We met in the mid-’90s at the opening of the Cynthia Rowley shop in South Beach. Esteban, the Colombian wunderkind, was always on the scene with a model on his arm. He lived with his father, painter Valentino Cortazar, above News Cafe. In 2002, when he was in the 10th grade at Design & Architecture Senior High, I shadowed him for a profile with his first business partner, financier Fernando Grandi. When Esteban launched his first women’s wear line at New York Fashion Week, he made The New York Times.

Five Manhattan years later, as if in a fairy tale, Esteban was transported to Paris as head designer of the House of Emanuel Ungaro. Already a well-known couture creature, Esteban rose to the task until several collections later, a spanner named Lindsay Lohan was thrown into the mix. Rather than collaborate with a starlet with no style cred, Esteban stepped down. A year later he rebounded in his native Colombia with an unprecedented Kawakubo-esque pret-a-porte collection for Exito, their answer to Target. Today, he’s back in Paris keeping his brand alive, recreating his original eponymous line — Esteban Cortazar.
