My Mother Drives Me Crazy!

Let’s face it, not all moms are created equal. Whether your mom reminds you more of Mrs. Bates, Madea or Mother Theresa, they all all come in different shapes, creeds and characters. From Tan Mom or Microwave Mom to Octomom, they all share the same unique ability to drive us crazy. Yet even if your mother was Joan Crawford you’d still love your matriarch (ok, perhaps not the best example).

In anticipation of celebrating our special moms this weekend, we’ve compiled some of our favorite mom archetypes.

Happy Mother’s Day – you are all indeed loved very much by all.

Thyme is of the Essence

Over the centuries thyme has been associated with just about anything. Ancient Egyptians used thyme for embalming, thinking it would pave way to the after-life. The Greeks believed it was a source of courage and the Romans thought it gave them vigor before battle. In the Middle Ages they credited it with warding off nightmares. The list goes on.

Personally, I just love the unique woody-herbal quality that thyme adds to a perfume. The presence of thyme for example, elevates COLOGNE POUR LE MATIN by Maison Francis Kurkdjian from an ordinary citrus-based eau de cologne into an unforgettable fragrance.

Whether for your skin or for your home, the scent of thyme is a must-have.

Check out the Babalu Perfume Bar for other distinct fragrances containing thyme, including Comme des Garcons Monocle (both Hinoki and Laurel) and all of the Alvarez Gomez Colonia products.

Objets d’Arts Fornasetti

In 1932, after two years at the Brera Academy of Art in Milan, Piero Fornasetti was expelled for insubordination. It’s comforting to know you can get kicked out of art school and still become a great artist.

Almost a century later, Fornasetti’s incredible designs live on. His witty graphic engravings — the most famous is his signature Mona Lisa — the wide-eyed, enigmatic face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri — adorn over 11,000 pieces of furniture, housewares and objets d’arts. My favorite, a 10-inch serving tray decorated with Lina’s face on a derriere. (Hers?) It pairs with another tray ordained with her smile superimposed on a woman’s, well, ahem. Scandale! The perfect charger for crudites at a baby shower?

Why not serve high tea during the holidays with Fornasetti’s exquisite Architettura teapot reminiscent of the Coliseum in Rome? Sip espresso in the matching cup-and-saucer set?

Or, light each night with Fornasetti Profumi candles exported direct from The Fornasetti Atelier in Milan, now run by Piero’s son Barnaba in the hand-crafted tradition of the old master, an artist who worked at home. We likey.

In Milan, the Fornasetti family home is a testament to the creativity of Piero Fornasetti. Developed and maintained by his son, the house is in the Città Studi area of Milan. It was built by Piero’s parents in the 19th century. Like a labyrinth, the villa is made up of a complex network of rooms and corridors. It became a canvas for Piero’s fervent creativity, and over the years, the rooms of the villa were decorated with all of his art. His home was his laboratory for his work with color and motif. Today it remains a living archive of his style.
